HJ Colclough began manufacturing in 1897 and became Colclough China Ltd in 1937. In 1908 the firm expanded to the Vale Works in Longton and the “Vale” trade name began to be used. Later after the royal visit of King George IV and Queen Mary to the Vale Works – “Royal Vale” was officially used. This item is a fine porcelain tea trio consisting of the tea plate, saucer and matching tea cup, with the tea plate designed in the squared shape and all three items with scalloped rims and extensively decorated with a gold chintz floral and leaf patterning across the surface of each. A misted gold trim has been used on the rims.
Each item is stamped underneath: Bone China, Royal Vale, Made in England, a Product of Ridgway Potteries Lrd.
The one tea cup has a short hairline from the rim down and the other has a chip on the inside of the rim at the tea cup handle (see pictures) and besides some fading of the gold chintz patterning on the saucers and tea plates as well as age related fading of the gold trim, the items are in very good condition with no visible damages.
